Senior Chief Mwalweni urges students to embrace ICT

By Mirriam Ngwira

Senior Chief Mwalweni of Rumphi has urged students at Lura Community Day Secondary School to embrace information and communications technology (ICT) in order to be relevant in the ever changing digital world.

Mwalweni made the remarks during the ground breaking ceremony for construction of a Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) funded ICT laboratory at the school on Thursday.

He has also urged parents to encourage their children to learn these skills in order to be relevant.

“When I was growing up ICT was not big, but in today’s world it is a must for young people especially students to have these skills as many business opportunities, education and other opportunities are being shared online,” he said.

Mwalweni has also promised to ensure that construction materials are used for the intended purpose and not diverted or sold.

MACRA Technologies Manager, Wilson Kalichero, said the initiative is important in reducing the gap that exists among students due to limited access to ICT services.

He further said ICT skills expose students to valuable resources online which may help improve their performance.

On Wednesday MACRA also launched the construction of ICT laboratories and Chirambo and Kamphenda Community Day Secondary Schools and Bolero Primary School.
