His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini and incoming chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation has called on Malawians to maintain peace and uphold democratic values as they head to the polls on Tuesday, September 16.
In a statement released Monday, King Mswati commended Malawi’s history of peace and stability, expressing confidence that the country will continue to uphold its reputation during and after elections.
“The people of the Republic of Malawi will go to the polls tomorrow to elect the president, members of parliament and councillors in line with the country’s constitution and laws,” he said.
He reaffirmed SADC’s commitment to supporting Malawi throughout the election period, noting that the regional body has deployed its electoral observation mission (SEOM) under the leadership of Themba Masuku, former deputy prime minister of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
He said the mission will monitor the pre-election phase, polling day, and post-election processes to ensure they are conducted in line with the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections adopted in 2021.
“These principles promote regular, free, fair, transparent, credible and peaceful democratic elections as key indicators of good governance in the region,” he explained.
He, therefore, urged all eligible voters to turn out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right and contribute to the country’s development.
“I further urge all political leaders and their supporters to respect the will of the people, and to act responsibly through the legal means provided by the laws of Malawi,” he said.
He wished Malawians a peaceful and successful election, emphasizing that the outcome should strengthen democracy, foster national unity and lay a foundation for prosperity.
