Tay Grin praised for Bringing Malawi’s Heritage to the Big Stage

By Alfred Banda

The Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture has commended hip-hop artist Tay Grin for promoting Malawian culture during his 20th Anniversary Music Concert held at Silver Stadium last Saturday, 6 September 2025.

The show, called Echoes of Greatness, attracted thousands of fans and featured international stars like Wizkid of Nigeria and Awilo Longomba of Congo, alongside local artists such as Zeze Kingston, Temwa, Tuno and many others.

Speaking in an interview, the Director of Arts in the Ministry, Humphrey Mpondaminga, said the inclusion of cultural elements like the Gule Wamkulu was an important step in promoting Malawi’s heritage.

“Tay Grin and his team did very well by involving the Gule Wamkulu on such a big stage. It is through such platforms that we can promote and showcase our culture both locally and internationally,” said Mpondaminga.

However, he advised organisers of big entertainment events to work closely with authorities and adhere to the Entertainment Act to ensure proper management of crowds and infrastructure.

“We noted challenges such as cars being parked on the main roads during the show, which created confusion. Going forward, organisers need to involve relevant offices so that such issues are addressed,” he said.

One fan who attended the show also described the event as memorable but suggested that future concerts should consider more spacious venues to ease parking challenges.

“The performances were beyond my expectations, but the parking space was not good. It would be better if such big shows are held in places with enough room for cars,” the fan said.

Tay Grin himself said it was his duty as a ‘Nyau king’ to promote Chewa culture and Malawian heritage.

“Being a Nyau king, it’s my responsibility to keep our culture alive. Incorporating Gule Wamkulu and Nyau performances into the show was my way of celebrating Malawian tradition while entertaining people,” he said.

The concert drew praise for fusing contemporary music with traditional culture, with Tay Grin incorporating Nyau performances on stage.
