Referees penalised over Ekhaya goalkeeper’s violent conduct

By Sheminah Nkhoma
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Referees Committee has suspended referee Michael Mwambyale for three months following an incident involving Ekhaya goalkeeper Elias Missi during a Super League match against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, Missi grabbed Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju by the neck after a mid-air collision, a serious incident that went unpunished during the match.
Following his suspension from officiating FAM and Super League matches, Mwambyale will be relegated to the National Division League for the remainder of the season.
The committee also suspended second assistant referee Fanuel Mailosi for two months, with a similar demotion to the National Division League.
FAM has recommended that goalkeeper Elias Missi be formally reprimanded for violent conduct, as no disciplinary action was taken during the game.
