SADC Executive Secretary arrives in Malawi to observe general elections

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary, His Excellency Elias Mpedi Magosi, has arrived in Lilongwe to join the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) for the 2024 general election in Malawi.
In a press statement signed by SADC and dated September 14, 2025, it was stated that the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) comprises 80 observers from SADC member states. The observers have been deployed to all 28 districts of Malawi and will monitor election-day procedures, including the opening of polls, voting, and the counting processes.
“Our mission is to observe and report on the conduct of the election and to provide an assessment of the process.
“Our presence here is a testament to SADC’s commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in the region,” reads part of the statement.
The SEOM will release a preliminary statement on the conduct of the election on election day, while a final report will be submitted to the SADC Summit.
“We urge all Malawians to exercise their right to vote and to do so peacefully; we are here to support the people of Malawi in their democracy journey,” reads the statement.
