The Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board, HESLGB, says it remains committed to fulfilling its statutory mandate of providing equitable access to higher education through loans and grants to needy students.
In a statement, the Board said in line with the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Act, it is dedicated to ensuring that financial challenges do not prevent eligible students from pursuing tertiary education.
The commitment comes at a critical time following the recent adjustment of tuition fees in public higher education institutions, a development that has raised concerns over affordability and access.
According to HESLGB, it is working closely with the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders to implement measures aimed at cushioning students from the impact of the revised fees.
The Board further disclosed that government, through the Ministry of Education, has assured it of additional financial resources to bridge the funding gap beyond the K42 billion allocated in the 2026/2027 National Budget.
“The additional support will enable HESLGB to finance all eligible students targeted under the 2026/2027 Students Loan and Grant Program,” reads part of the statement.
HESLGB has assured the public that efforts are underway to ensure deserving and needy students continue to access financial support in accordance with the established eligibility criteria and provisions of the Act.
The Board added that it is currently finalizing all administrative and operational processes for the smooth implementation of the 2026/2027 Students Loans and Grants Program.
