The Malawi Police Service, MPS, has recorded a significant decline in road traffic accidents and fatalities during the 2026 Independence Day holiday commemorated on July 6.
According to the MPS, two fatal road accidents were recorded this year, compared to six during the same period in 2025. This represents a 67 percent decrease.
National Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Alfred Chimthere, said road traffic deaths also dropped from seven in 2025 to two in 2026, representing a 71 percent reduction in lives lost.
The report further shows that no serious road traffic accidents were recorded this year, compared to one in 2025, a 100 percent decrease.
In addition, seven minor road accidents were recorded, resulting in eight people sustaining slight injuries.
There were also no damage-only road accidents reported, compared to one in 2025, also representing a 100 percent decrease.
The Police attribute the decline to coordinated road safety interventions, intensified traffic law enforcement, increased highway patrols, and strong collaboration with stakeholders in conducting nationwide road safety campaigns.
