The Ministry of Transport has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives on the country’s roads and to achieving the global target of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by at least 50 percent by 2030.
In a statement signed by the Minister of Transport, Jappie Mhango the ministry said road safety is a national development, public health, and social equity imperative.“Every death or life-changing injury on our roads represents an immeasurable loss to families and communities. Such tragedies also impose significant social and economic costs on the nation,” Mhango said.
He highlighted that Malawi renews its support for the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, the Stockholm Declaration, and the road safety targets under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Minister added that these global commitments complement the country’s implementation of Malawi 2063 and the National Road Safety Strategy.He said Although Malawi will not be represented by an official delegation at the high-level meeting, this does not diminish the government’s resolve. Through this declaration, Malawi stands with the international community in affirming that road traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable, and that decisive, coordinated, and sustained action is required,” reads part of the statement.
The Ministry further indicated that its priority is to provide strong national leadership and reinforce government coordination, accountability, and results-based implementation of the National Road Safety Strategy.
