Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr Shadric Namalomba has said government intends to connect 2,000 schools with free internet.
Speaking at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) in Zomba on Thursday where he engaged officials to appreciate the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, Dr Namalomba said the world is changing and so is technology.
He then said, schools which are source of knowledge needs to be connected to the internet.
“The World Bank has supported us with enough funds to improve internet connectivity. We plan to connect 2,000 schools and 500 of which will be public schools, ” he said.
The minister also stressed on the need to introduce national E-Libraries and E-books.Vice Chancellor for the University of Malawi , Prof. Samson Sajidu hailed the ministry for championing internet connectivity and digital transformation.
Sajidu said as a tertiary institution, they value the internet because it is the backbone of the academic world.
“As an institution, there is a lot that we are benefiting from the project.
There is a lot of transformation in the way we do our work including teaching, ” Prof. Sajidu said.
Meanwhile, the minister has appealed to the university management to own the project and put sustainable mechanisms.
