Giving is the nature of God. As God’s children, we also need to be givers. There was a church in Macedonia who seemed to be addicted to giving, and yet they seem to be a poor church. Paul discovered that these Christians had unlocked this spirit of giving in them by doing something:
2 Corinthians 8:3-5 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. (emphasis added)
What an amazing church! The key to their commitment to giving was that they gave themselves first to the Lord. The main thing that holds us back is self. When we are so concerned about our needs and lack, we fail to give to God. Needs will always be there, but when you know that you belong entirely to God, you become more than willing to be a blessing to others!
