Youth organization to distribute condoms at Umthetho

By Joel Phiri

Executive Director for Mzimba Youth Organisation, Moses Nkhana, says his organization has procured 50,000 packets of condoms to be distributed to festival goers at this year’s Umthetho Cultural Festival set to take place at Hora in Mzimba from August 2 to 3.

In an interview, Nkhana said the purchase of condoms is part of several activities the organization has lined up for the festival.

“We know we can’t control the behaviour of people. That is why we are planning to distribute those condoms.

“Apart from distributing condoms, we will also be conducting training workshops to 200 group village heads and other custodians of culture on their role in bridging the gender gap in the context of climate change adaptation and resilience,” said Nkhana.

According to Nkhana, the organization has budgeted K3.2 million for all activities at the festival.

Group Village Head Amon Moyo of Traditional Authority (TA) Mzikubola said distribution of condoms at such a big event is a welcome idea.

“Let them distribute as many condoms as they can. Where men and women, girls and boys meet you can’t rule out sexual acts happening. So, the distribution of condoms at Umthetho will go a long way in the prevention of sexual infections and also pregnancies,” said Moyo.

This year’s Umthetho Cultural Festival is being celebrated under the theme Uniting against Climate Change under a decade of Inkosi M’mbelwa V.
