Vice President Dr. Michael Usi on Saturday joined hundreds of people in Dedza to mourn Dr John Mataya, whom he worked with at the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).
Speaking at the ceremony Minister of Information and Digitalization, Moses Kumkuyu said President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera expressed sadness over the death of Mataya who died at the age of 71.
Mataya served as District Commissioner in several districts including Blantyre and Salima, worked as Executive Director for Malawi School of Government formerly Malawi Institute of Management, and worked at the Office of President and Cabinet among other positions.
Kunkuyu described Mataya as a learned and humble person who also worked hard through business not only for himself but also for the betterment of people around him.“He lived a prayerful life and touched the lives of many people. His education has benefited not only his family, but the nation at large,” said Kunkuyu.
Inkosi Ya Makosi Gomani 5 described Mataya as a loving uncle who paid detail to every assignment before him.
“He was hard working and emphasized promoting peace. He liked praying and encouraged others to know God,” he said.
A representative of the business community Gama Lingalawe said Mataya had created job opportunities through his businesses including meat and flour production.
Mataya is survived by a wife, three children and grandchildren.
