Tobacco Market Records Strong Performance in 2026 Season Despite Challenges

By Wendy Mkandawire

The Tobacco Market Commission (TMC) says Malawi’s tobacco market has recorded a positive performance in the 2026 selling season despite challenging market conditions.

According to a Commission report covering the 12-week period from April 20 to July 10, the country sold 202.19 million kilograms of tobacco, generating about US$413.5 million. The average selling price stood at US$2.05 per kilogram.

TMC Spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe said the overall performance reflects a positive trend, driven largely by strong contract sales.

“Contract tobacco recorded a 97.2% uptake rate, which is a clear sign of effective engagement between the Commission and tobacco buying companies,” Chigwenembe said.

He, however, noted that uptake for auction tobacco remains low at 41.3%, but said this presents room for improvement as the season progresses.

The Commission attributes the strong overall figures to contract sales, which continue to account for the bulk of volumes this year.

According to Chigwenembe, Going forward, they will continue strengthening relationships with buyers and implementing measures aimed at improving auction tobacco uptake before the season closes.

The 2026 season has so far been marked by steady demand under contract arrangements, even as the Commission works to revitalize the auction system.
