Team Malawi is expected to depart for Windhoek, Namibia via Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) on Wednesday to participate in the 11th edition of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games.
The team is expected to compete in 14 sporting disciplines, including football, netball, E-sports (video games), boxing, karate, and tennis, among others.
Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, General Team Manager Macmillan Mwale, who is also Ministry of Youth and Sports Public Relations Officer, expressed confidence in the athletes selected to represent Malawi, describing the squad as well-prepared and competitively chosen.
“We have coaches and managers that have the technical know-how in terms of managing their respective disciplines, and it is these experts who were involved in selecting the athletes. So, we are optimistic that among the list, they have picked the best to represent the country in Namibia,” said Mwale.
He added that this year’s team underwent an intensive selection process with 14 coaches scouting talent across various disciplines.
Mwale also highlighted the unique preparation approach taken this year.
“For the first time, the team has undergone three training camps, which is a first of its kind. Malawians should expect the best results from this team,” he said.
Malawi Aquatic Union Team Manager for the Region 5 swim team, Takondwa Chang’anamuno, assured Malawians of great results from the swimmers, noting that the athletes remained committed to training despite facing unfavorable weather conditions.
“Selection of the athletes has been based on how they performed in the nationals. The athletes have improved over time since the past few years. I believe that even when the games begin, they will give it their best,” said Chang’anamuno.
She noted that some of the swimmers representing Malawi this year have been groomed since 2022 adding experience and consistency to the team.
