Children in Karonga have called on authorities to intensify efforts in safeguarding their rights and improving their welfare.
The call was made Monday by a learner at Kasantha Primary School, Tiyamike Msiska, during commemoration of the Day of the African Child held at the school in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga.
He said authorities should ensure that children enjoy their rights for them to realize full potential of their goals.
Children in Malawi continue to face many challenges which, in most cases, emanates from poverty, child labour, lack of basic necessities and forced child marriages

“The situation calls for immediate and well-coordinated action to address these challenges,” said Msiska.
Chairperson for Karonga District Council, Bellium Msukwa, said the Council has put in place strategies to address issues affecting children in the district.
“We are working with all stakeholders and partners such as media, non-governmental organizations, government ministries, departments and agencies to take decisive action in tackling these challenges,” said Msukwa.
District Social Welfare Officer for Karonga, Henry Mshanga, said having been reminded of the challenges, it is the council’s obligation to take action by formulating and implementing policies that protect children and support their aspirations.
This year’s commemoration was held under the theme ‘Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Made Since 2010’.
The day is commemorated annually on June 16 to amplify voices of children on issues which affect them.
