Godfrey Sibale scored late to give Karonga United a historic 1–0 victory over neighbours Chitipa United on the final day of the 2025 TNM Super League season at Karonga Stadium on Saturday.
Sibale struck in the 81st minute to hand the Crocodiles their first league win over Chitipa at the eighth attempt.
Chitipa finished the match with ten men after Asuman Julius was sent off in the 83rd minute for two yellow cards.
Played in difficult conditions following heavy rains, the derby saw Karonga dominate proceedings but struggle to convert their chances against a subdued Chitipa side.
The breakthrough came nine minutes from time when Sibale tapped in Allen Chihana’s pass, sealing all three points.
The win ensured Karonga United finished the season sixth on the table with 44 points from 30 matches.
Meanwhile, the defeat ended Chitipa United’s slim hopes of qualifying for next season’s Airtel Top Eight tournament, leaving them 11th with 37 points from 30 games.
Karonga United coach Oscar Kaunda praised his side’s performance despite missed opportunities.
“We were superb and should have scored more goals, but we will take the win, especially as it is our first league victory against Chitipa,” he said.
Chitipa United coach Kondwani Ikwanga admitted his side were outplayed.
“We did not turn up today. We made it easy for Karonga because we offered nothing in the game, which was disappointing,” he said.
