Salima District Council, through the sports office, conducted a three-day athletics training aimed at equipping primary school teachers with skills needed to effectively train learners in sports.
The training program which started on November 21 and ended on November 23 was aimed to build teachers’ capacity in coaching techniques, competition rules, and safety procedures that must be observed when training students in athletics.
Speaking during the closing session, at Msalura Primary School in Salima, Salima District Council Sports Officer, Grace Chirambo, highlighted that 10 teachers from various schools were selected to attend the full training program.
“However, two teachers failed to finish the training and eight successfully completed the sessions and received their certificates. We are hopeful that the skills gained by the participants will help boost athletics across the district,” she said.
Chirambo anticipates that the training will enhance Salima’s future performance in competitions, because the teachers trained will nurture learners at an early stage in their schools.
One of the participants, James Chimonjo, expressed excitement after receiving his certificate, saying the training has strengthened his confidence to coach students.
“I am happy to be awarded this certificate. The lessons have taught me how to properly guide learners in athletics, and I believe this will help improve sports at my school,” he said.
Some of the schools represented in the training included Mtiya, Ngodzi, Mbwezela, and Msalura primary schools among others.
