Parliament on Wednesday passed two financing bills worth US$130 million, about K228 billion, for exports and local development.
The funds are aimed at strengthening Malawi’s export capacity and improving service delivery through local councils.
The bills authorise the government to use US$50 million for an export facility and US$80 million for the Governance and Economic Service Delivery Project, GESD 2. The project will be implemented by local councils with support from the World Bank.
Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanavekha said the funds are critical in addressing Malawi’s foreign exchange challenges and improving service delivery at the local level.
“The financing will help strengthen trade by increasing exports, while also improving Constituency Development Fund initiatives to ensure communities benefit from improved development projects and public services,” Mwanamvekha said.
According to Mwanamvekha, the export facility will support businesses to expand production for both regional and international markets.
GESD 2 will enhance accountability, planning, and implementation of development projects at council level.
During the debate, Members of Parliament called for transparency and accountability to ensure the resources are used for intended purposes.
