Minister of Justice to Draft a New Law Dealing with Vandalism of Public Infrastructure.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Charles Mhango, says government needs to bring a new law to Parliament to deal with vandalism of public infrastructure.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday 4th August 2026,while responding to Members of Parliament, Mhango said offenders must face stiffer punishment if caught vandalising public infrastructures.
He said he will discuss the proposal with the Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito, before the law is presented in Parliament.

The Minister expressed concern that Malawi is losing a lot of public property saying People are breaking down road signs, street lights, and culverts. If this behaviour continues, this country will not develop
The minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito responded during an interview that current legal framework needs to be reviewed to curb vandalism of infrastructure in Malawi .
Mhango also spoke on the stalled Judicial Complex project. He said government needs to pay local contractors to finish the perimeter wall first. This will allow contractors from China to begin the main construction work.
The Minister said he is optimistic that the Minister of Finance will consider releasing funds to pay the local contractors so that work can resume.
