Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Shadric Namalomba, has called for a shift in how Malawi communicates HIV prevention messages, saying the country must make better use of existing communication platforms in the face of limited resources.
He made the remarks on Monday evening at the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) offices in Blantyre during a candle light memorial ceremony held on this year’s World AIDS Day, commemorated under the theme Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response.Namalomba said the HIV response requires a shift in how messages are delivered, especially at a time when resources are limited and the health sector continues to feel the pressure of economic challenges.
“We need to rethink how we communicate. Even with the little we have, we must use the tools already around us to reach people with the right information,” he said.
The minister also stressed the importance of prevention, saying abstinence, faithfulness and responsible workplace behaviour remain the most effective ways of reducing HIV transmission despite the availability of new preventive medications.
MACRA’s Acting Director General, Mphatso Mpiri, said the organisation understands the central role it plays as a regulator in the communication sector and will continue working with industry players to support the national HIV response.
“We work with different players in the industry to make sure accurate information reaches the public. The minister’s challenge has come at the right time, and we will drive efforts that help Malawi stay ahead in the fight against HIV.”
she said.
she said.Blantyre District Health Officer, Dr. Steven Mlangiza, outlined recent developments in HIV prevention, including pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis and new long-acting injectable options while noting that the medicines reduce risk but should not replace responsible sexual behaviour.
MACRA holds the candle light ceremony annually to reflect on progress, honour lost lives and encourage renewed commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS.
