Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has praised Airtel Malawi for its donation to support vulnerable communities affected by food insecurity in Malawi.
He made the remarks in Lilongwe on Tuesday during a cheque presentation.
The donation will support the 2025/2026 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme, which aims to provide relief to over four million Malawians facing food insecurity due to climate-induced shocks.
He said Airtel Malawi’s contribution speaks not only to financial strength but also to unwavering commitment to the well-being of Malawians.
“Airtel Malawi’s support is both commendable and inspiring. It reinforces a simple truth that addressing hunger is not the responsibility of government alone; it is a shared national duty,” he said.
Mwanamvekha emphasized the importance of collaboration among government, private sector, and development partners to address humanitarian challenges.
He said government recognises that no single institution can meet the challenge alone describing Airtel Malawi’s support as a model of a partnership and demonstration of responsible mobile company and genuine commitment to national development.
He, therefore, urged the corporate sector to follow Airtel Malawi’s example and contribute to national efforts to address hunger and support vulnerable communities.
Airtel Malawi Managing Director, Ashish Dutt, emphasized Airtel’s commitment to supporting national welfare.
“We believe it is our responsibility as a corporate citizen to support government initiatives that safeguard the well being of Malawians,” he said.
Dutt said their contribution is aimed at ensuring that vulnerable households have access to maize as government intensifies relief efforts.
Airtel Malawi donated K300 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) through Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation to help vulnerable households who have faced disaster.
