MEC Advises By-Election Presiding Officers to be Professional

By Wendy Mkandawire
The Malawi Electoral Commission has told presiding officers for the June 30, 2026, by election to work professionally to deliver credible by-elections.
MEC Director of Finance Khumbo Phiri made the call in Machinga, while Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja made a similar call in Bwaila, Lilongwe, where the 2025 polls were nullified over irregularities.
Speaking after a training session for presiding officers in Machinga District, MEC Director of Finance Khumbo Phiri said the Commission expects a concerted effort among all stakeholders to avoid the irregularities experienced in past elections in other areas.
Phiri expressed confidence that the training will equip presiding officers with the knowledge required to manage the June 30 by-elections in the district. He advised all presiding officers to work professionally with the skills provided so that the Commission can hold credible elections.
In a related development, MEC Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja echoed the same message during a training session at Bwaila Constituency in Lilongwe District.
Mtalimanja said it is the Commission’s desire to hold credible elections in Bwaila after the 2025 parliamentary elections were nullified due to irregularities. She pledged that the Commission will not repeat the same mistakes.
The Malawi Electoral Commission is expected to hold by-elections for local and parliamentary seats on June 30, 2026, in some districts of the country.
