Blantyre City Mayor, Isaac Jomo Osman, has assured residents that the council has put strong security measures in place to ensure a safer festive season this year.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Clock Tower during the Christmas Lights Switch-On Ceremony, the Mayor said the council wants people in Blantyre to celebrate the season with confidence, knowing that their safety is a priority.
Osman said the council has already engaged security agencies to step up patrols and monitor activities across the city.
“We want people to feel safe. This year we expect tighter security. We have already held discussions with different security officers and our own team at the council. We will do our best to ensure residents are protected,” Osman said.
He added that the event also aims to bring communities together and remind them of the importance of unity during the festive season.
“As a city, we belong to the people. We want them to understand that Blantyre City Council is there to serve them. We need to work together and support one another,” he said.
One of the residents who attended the ceremony, Kelvin Mpiri from Bangwe, said the gesture by the mayor and the council gives citizens hope as they enter a season known for increased activity and potential crime.
“As residents, we are happy that the mayor has opened the festive season for us. It is encouraging to see him, his deputy, and senior council officials officiating at this ceremony. His assurance on security is very important because this period usually comes with both celebrations and some challenges,” Mpiri said.
The Christmas Lights Switch-On Ceremony brought together the Deputy Mayor, council officials, and residents, marking the beginning of a lively festive atmosphere in the city.
