Malawi is today celebrating the birthday of its leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who was born on 18 July 1940 in Thyolo District.
President Mutharika is an internationally recognized expert in economic law. Before entering politics, he spent decades as a professor of international and comparative law in the United States and other countries.
He joined the government in 2009 during the administration of his elder brother, the late President Bingu wa Mutharika.
Between 2009 and 2012, he served as Advisor to the President on Foreign and Domestic Policy, Minister of Justice, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, and later Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 2012, he was elected leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Two years later in 2014, he was elected President of Malawi.
During his first term from 2014 to 2020, President Mutharika is remembered for his efforts in infrastructure development and economic stabilization. After losing the 2020 court ordered election, he made a political comeback and returned to office in 2025 on a campaign promise of “return to proven leadership.”
As he marks another year, the President has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the lives of Malawians by fighting hunger and poverty.
He has promised to build a country that benefits everyone through economic stability and inclusive growth.
Malawians are optimistic that his return to power will transform malawi ‘s economy.
