An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation is in Malawi for high-level talks with the government on a possible return of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF), barely months after the expiry of the four-year program approved in 2023.
Ministry of Finance spokesperson Williams Banda says the team is set to meet officials from the Treasury and the Reserve Bank of Malawi to review policy measures and assess Malawi’s progress ahead of the IMF’s final decision.
Banda said the government is hopeful for a positive outcome as discussions focus on economic reforms and fiscal discipline.
However, the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT) representative, Willy Kambwandira, has faulted the government for implementing austerity measures merely to impress donors and secure ECF approval.
He further accused both parties of lacking transparency, arguing that closed-door negotiations deny citizens and civil society a chance to scrutinize key economic decisions
Meanwhile, social commentator Joseph Kandiyesa holds a different view, urging Malawi to channel donor funds into productive sectors like agriculture, mining, and tourism to wean itself off aid dependency.
Kandiyesa was, however, skeptical that the current engagement will yield real change, describing previous discussions as mere paperwork with little impact on the ground.
