| As a University Lecturer, my job is to support my students of all ages attain their degrees. As such, graduation is one of the most significant moments in my career as a lecturer—a day when hope, perseverance, and the triumph of the human spirit shine through. Every time I witness my students, especially those who have overcome immense obstacles, step forward to receive their degrees, I am filled with a profound sense of pride and inspiration. Their success is a testament to the power of resilience, reinforcing my belief in the transformative nature of education.
I vividly recall a recent graduation day when my emotions overwhelmed me as I watched my students embrace their future with open hearts. Among them were two exceptional individuals whose journeys will forever be etched in my memory.
Jack, for instance, is a living example of determination. On the last day of classes, after everyone else had departed, he pulled me aside. With tears of joy streaming down his face, he said, “I am the first in our extended family to attend college, let alone finish, and I cannot thank you enough for your help, sir.” Jack has faced significant challenges, yet his unwavering determination has shone through. Witnessing a man in his fifties—a father of grown-up children—overcome such hurdles and realise his dream was a moving reminder that every sacrifice I make as a teacher is worthwhile.
Then there is Shola, whose journey epitomises resilience. Shola has battled a serious heart condition that once threatened to derail her academic progress and personal life. In the early days, she was falling behind in credits and had nearly given up hope. However, after weeks of encouragement and support, Shola made a decision that would change her destiny. One early morning, she rescheduled a crucial heart procedure just so she could attend my class at 9:45 am. With unyielding determination, she entered the room, proudly waving her heart scan and prescription, and declared, “I could not afford to miss this class. I must persevere, not only for myself but for my children and grandchildren.” Her commitment to her future and her family’s wellbeing was a powerful affirmation of what it means to never give up.
I learned this from Jesus Christ—the greatest teacher who ever lived. His main objective was, and still is, to help humanity—especially those facing significant challenges—succeed. Jesus declared, “I have come so that people may have abundant life.” God anointed Him to lift the poor, heal the sick, and restore confidence in those who felt insignificant, unwanted, or unloved. Even prisoners were promised a life of freedom and prosperity through His message. In this way, Jesus is committed to helping us flourish because our prosperity is His key performance indicator. When we struggle or feel lost, He is ever-present, doing everything in His power to support us. Scripture tells us that when those who were lost are finally found and made whole, there is a great celebration in heaven—a celebration that mirrors our own triumphs.
Yet, none of this comes easily. It takes determination, resilience, and a commitment to following His guidance, no matter how daunting the challenges. Every achievement, every small step forward, is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and love—a reminder that we are never alone on our journey to a future filled with hope and endless possibilities.
Attaching our victory with those we love the most is the greatest motivation. We owe it to the next generation to keep going. The barriers we overcome today will open the door for those coming after us. Let’s win for the nearest and dearest: our children, our grandchildren, and many generations to come.
