Efforts escalated in search of VP\’s Plane as Chakwera Cancels Bahamas Trip

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has cancelled his trip to Bahamas where he was scheduled to attend the 31st AFREXIMBANK annual meeting and Afri- Caribbean trade and Investment forum in Nassau, Bahamas.

The meeting is expected to take place from 12th to 14th June 2024.

The cancellation follows an official communication from the Office of the President and Cabinet of the missing Malawi Defense Force Aircraft carrying the Vice President Dr.  Saulosi Claus Chilima and Nine others.

The Aircraft which left Lilongwe on Monday 10th June 2024 at 9;17 hours  failed to make its scheduled landing at  Mzuzu  International Airport at 10;02.

All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft since It went off the radar have failed thus far and as such the Commander of the Malawi Defence force, General Valentino Phiri had informed His excellency Dr. Lazarus Mc Cathy Chakwera of the incident.

The Malawi leader has since canceled his scheduled departure for the Bahamas and has ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft and the public will be updated of any developments on the situation as facts are established.

Chilima was scheduled to attend the burial of the late Ralph Kasambara, SC in Nkhatabay.
