Police has Arrested Two NOCMA Officers

By Wendy Mkandawire
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested Deputy Chief Executive Officer Miklas Reuben and Thokozani Jacob Sesani Senior Operations Manager for the National Oil Company of Malawi ( NOCMA) in connection with the alleged fraudulent transfer of USD 403,615.63.
According to a statement signed by Deputy National Public Relations Officer Alfred Chinthere, the money was allegedly transferred to account number 237055126003 belonging to Moniray Mozhandling Lda.
The two are likely to face charges of negligence by a public officer in preserving public money and misuse of public office, among other related offences.
Police say the transfer was purportedly made to facilitate loading and clearing charges for fuel at the ports of Beira and Nacala in Mozambique.
The arrests come days after NOCMA issued a statement saying hackers had duped it into transferring K700 million to a fraudulent Bank of America account after impersonating Mozambican port handling firm Mozhandling Limited.
MPS says the two will appear in court and investigations are ongoing.
