Namalomba calls for protection and promotion of free to air

By MANA
Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, has called for protection and promotion of free-to-air channels as a public good and a necessary investment that aligns well with Malawi’s digital transformation agenda under MW2063.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during a courtesy meeting with the new Canal Africa leadership team in Blantyre. This is the first high-level engagement in Malawi since Canal+ acquired MultiChoice Group in September 2025.
The Canal+ team expressed commitment to working collaboratively with Malawian authorities and investing in the local creative industry.
Discussions covered a wide range of issues, including strengthening collaboration in Malawi’s ICT sector, supporting local content development and Malawian creators, ensuring fair compensation for local broadcasters, and resolving historical regulatory matters.
The Canal+ delegation to the meeting included Chief Financial Officer for Africa Nicolas Dandoy, Chief Executive Officer for PayTV English Africa, Retief Tromp, Senior Advisor to the Canal+ Board Andrea Silva, and Regulatory Affairs Executive Head for Southern Africa Lloyd Momba. The local MultiChoice Malawi team was led by Managing Director Averess Ndhlovu-Chella.
