The Government of Zimbabwe on Tuesday donated a second consignment of maize to Malawi to support households affected by prolonged dry spells that have caused food insecurity in parts of the country.
The donation, comprising 370 tonnes of maize, was officially handed over at the National Food Reserve Agency in Kanengo, Lilongwe.
Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Adack Saidi said the assistance demonstrates Zimbabwe’s continued commitment to supporting Malawi during times of need.
He said Zimbabwe first delivered relief items on January 27 this year, including foodstuffs and blankets, and has since pledged to continue assisting Malawi.
“We want to express our gratitude to the people of Zimbabwe through their President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, for this support. Zimbabwe has shown that it has come to stay in supporting Malawi,” Saidi said.
Saidi added that Zimbabwe has already indicated plans to deliver a third consignment of relief items in the coming weeks.
Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Malawi Nancy Saugweme said the relief is being delivered in phases to ensure effective distribution to beneficiaries.
She said Malawi and Zimbabwe share strong historical and social ties, noting that the donation reflects the spirit of family and good neighbourliness between the two countries.
“Malawi and Zimbabwe are one people. As neighbours and family, we felt it was important to share what we have,” Saugweme said.
The maize donation is expected to complement ongoing government efforts to support vulnerable households affected by the dry spell.
