Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah SC has described corruption as a moral crime that erodes human dignity.
Ansah made the remarks on Tuesday at Bingu International Convention Centre during the commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day under the theme: Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption.
She said the theme complements the global campaign on the crucial role of young people in combating corruption and building a future of integrity, transparency and accountability whose theme is Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrows Integrity.The Vice President urged Malawian youths to reject shortcuts and dishonest gains, stand firm in truth and integrity, and safeguard the nations future.
“The fight against corruption is not only about protecting resources, but also about safeguarding human dignity. Every misappropriated Kwacha is a classroom unbuilt, a hospital unstocked, and a dream deferred,” Ansah said.
She highlighted President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s Zero Tolerance Policy on corruption and pledged government’s support to strengthen the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), promising interventions to bolster its independence and capacity.“The culture of undermining the Bureau and its independence must come to an end,” she said, thanking civil society, traditional leaders, the private sector, and development partners for backing the ACB.
Acting Director General of ACB, Gabriel Chembezi, said the fight against corruption goes beyond protecting resources, stressing that it is about preserving human dignity.
