In a time when some argue that rap has strayed from its conscious roots, there are still shining examples of Hip-Hop’s true essence thriving today.
Among these is the underground Malawian rap group Gutter Bridge, known to dedicated Hip-Hop enthusiasts for their authentic sound and lyrical depth.

Gutter Bridge comprises a talented collective of Malawian rappers, some based in South Africa and others in their home country, Malawi.
The group has made waves in the industry, showcasing their exceptional lyrical abilities and commitment to the culture.
Recently, veteran rapper D-Real of Gutter Bridge collaborated with legendary emcee Dominant One on an Extended Playlist (EP) titled Carlito, released on April 28.
This eight-track project has been praised for its role in keeping Hip-Hop alive, pushing boundaries while maintaining the genre’s integrity.
In an exclusive conversation, Dominant One shared insights about the creation of the EP, emphasizing its organic process. “To be honest, there was no real inspiration,” he explained. “It was just straight chemistry between D-Real and me. We decided we wanted to make a project, and we began recording tracks without any pressure. We simply focused on the main theme we were creating.”
When asked about Gutter Bridge’s impact on the Hip-Hop scene, Dominant One revealed their primary motivation:
“We’re not really into achievements; we just want to keep Hip-Hop street culture authentic.”
Beyond the EP, Gutter Bridge has also released a new cypher produced by Dominant One, further solidifying their influence in the Hip-Hop landscape.

Dominant One, who joined the Gutter Bridge movement in 2017, is hailed as a pioneer of Malawian Hip-Hop and is making strides in South Africa by producing for artists like Maglera Doe Boy.
As the creative director, main producer, and mix engineer for Gutter Bridge, Dominant One aims to create art that positively impacts people’s lives, viewing any accolades as mere byproducts of that mission.
