Police in Chikwawa have arrested two Mozambican nationals ldentified as Julio Oromado aged 25 and Steven George aged 30 after they were found in possession of AK_47riffle, two star pistol and other offensive weapons at Kamudzu bridge roadbrock.
According to public Relations officer senior superintendent Glads Chiwaula confirmed the arrest in a statement which was released on 27 September 2026.
Chiwaula said , the two were arrested on 27 September 2026 at the Kamuzu Bridge Roadblock in Chikwawa after they tried to bypass the checkpoint.
She said officers intercepted them and recovered an AK-47 rifle, two Star pistols, a Heckler and Koch gun, a pick, a panga knife, and a pound hammer.
The MPS has since warned that illegal firearms and offensive weapons have no place in communities, stressing that anyone found in possession of such items will face the full force of the law.
The service has also reminded the public that the amnesty month for returning illegal firearms to the police is currently ongoing.
Meanwhile, security expert Master Mfune has described the incident as a serious security lapse, attributing it to corruption at the highest level.
Mfune argued that the presence of such sophisticated weapons in the hands of foreign nationals points to compromised border security and systemic corruption

The Service has also reminded the public that the amnesty month to return illegal firearms to the police is ongoing and remains committed to safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace and order.
Police have urged the public to report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police formation immediately.
