The Parliamentary Committee on Health has advised the government to learn from Morocco and implement measures that can help promote the health sector in Malawi.
Committee Chairperson Anthony Mansamba, made the call on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, while presenting a delegation report on GITEX The First Edition of Future Health Africa, which took place in Morocco from May 4 to 6, 2026.
Mansamba said the committee’s findings show that Malawi’s health system continues to face numerous challenges.
These include long distances that citizens travel to access health services and inadequate health supplies, such as medical drugs.
To address this, the committee has appealed to the government to consider upgrading some district and central hospitals into referral facilities.
“Currently, Malawi has only three major referral hospitals: Kamuzu Central Hospital, Mzuzu Central Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital,” Mansamba said.
He said expanding the number of referral centers would reduce congestion and improve access for patients in rural areas.
The committee has also advised the Ministry of Health to adopt Morocco’s stakeholder engagement strategies by 2027. The strategies include public-private partnerships and increased community involvement to enhance collaboration in Malawi’s health sector.
Reacting to the development, Deputy Minister of Health Charles Chilambura commended the committee for the recommendations made in the report.
Chilambura further disclosed that some of the recommendations are already being implemented on the ground .
