Spotlight on Fio Music: Lilongwe’s Rising Female Rapper

By Chiyembekezo Kachitsa

In the vibrant city of Lilongwe, a new star is emerging in the music scene—Fio Music. Although she began her musical journey just a few years ago in 2020, Fio has already shown great potential to make a significant impact on the ever-expanding music industry.

Fio Music

Fio’s path to music was unexpected. She initially had no plans to pursue a music career, but she loved freestyling with her cousin. Encouraged by her cousin to record a real song, Fio was surprised and motivated by the positive reception it received, inspiring her to delve deeper into her musical journey.

Growing up, Fio was influenced by a diverse range of music, drawing inspiration from old-school global icons like Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Tupac, and Michael Jackson, as well as new-school artists like Dababy and Blueface. Despite her passion for music, Fio only fully engaged with the Malawian music industry when she decided to commit to her career.

Initially, Fio rapped exclusively in English. Her collaboration with Ace Jizzy on the track “Ma Label” marked her first experience rapping in her local language. This collaboration came to life thanks to producer Yung star.

When asked about ways to enhance the Malawian music industry, Fio emphasized the importance of artists supporting one another. She believes that established artists should help upcoming talents, and those new talents should, in turn, support each other.

Looking ahead to 2025, Fio plans to release more music, as 2024 proved to be quite a hectic year for her.
