Mulanje District Sports Officer, Shelif Malunga, has underscored the importance of youth engagement in sports, particularly netball, as a vital tool for talent development and community empowerment.
Speaking at Lauderdale on Sunday during the grand finale of a three-month-long netball bonanza, Malunga said that increasing youth participation especially among girls would not only enhance physical fitness but also instill values like discipline, teamwork, and determination.
“We need to encourage more young people, especially girls, to get involved in sports like netball. It not only promotes physical health but also builds teamwork, discipline, and can even open doors to professional opportunities,” said Malunga.
The tournament concluded with Minimini Netball Club clinching a narrow victory over Mimosa, winning 10 baskets to 8 in a thrilling final.
Minimini walked away with the top prize of K110 thousand, while runners-up Mimosa took home K90 thousand.
Minimini Head Coach, Hastings Chabwera, expressed his delight at the team’s win, praising the players for their determination and resilience.
“This win is a result of the dedication and perseverance shown by our players. We are truly proud of their efforts,” he said.
The netball bonanza, which began three months ago, aimed at unearthing local talent and fostering community engagement through sport.
