Songwe Border United’s Super League season came to a premature end on Wednesday as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Mzuzu City Hammers at Karonga Stadium, officially confirming their relegation after one season in the top flight league.
The result, which leaves Songwe on just six points from 25 games, has made it mathematically impossible for the Ndenga Boys to catch Mafco FC, who occupy 13th place with 24 points.
Even victories in all their remaining matches would leave them unable to escape the drop as their maximum tally is 21 points.
For Mzuzu City Hammers, however, the victory was a crucial boost in their own battle against relegation.
The win lifts them to 23 points, just one shy of Mafco, and keeps their top-flight survival hopes alive with just five games remaining.
First half goals from Arnold Phiri in the 27th minute, Hassen Luwembe in the 30th minute and a late strike in second half added time by Isaiah Nyirenda wrapped up the win, sealing a dominant display for the visitors.
In a post-match interview, Mzuzu City Hammers Assistant Coach, Lawrence Waya, praised his players effort in such a high-stake match.
“It was always going to be a tough game, and we knew we had to win by any means to keep our survival hopes alive. I am proud of how the boys stayed focused, worked hard for each other, and executed our plan perfectly,” he said.
Songwe Border United Technical Director, Gift Chilongo, admitted disappointment at the team’s performance.
“I am really disappointed with the way my players approached the game. They lacked intensity and commitment from the start and seemed too relaxed despite knowing the importance of the match.
We didn’t fight for the ball, didn’t press enough and, as a result, we paid the price of relegation. We must learn from this performance as we prepare for the lower division,” Chilongo explained.
