Malawi National women football team ( Schochers) head coach Lovemore Fazili has asked his players not to be overwhelmed with the successful World cup qualification but stay focused to the semifinal match against Algeria in the WAFCON on Wednesday 12 August 2026.
Fazili made the remarks following the remarkable 2-1victory against Ghana the Black Queens on Sunday, which at the end, the schochers made automatic qualifications for the 2027 FIFA women World cup and also advancing into the WAFCON semifinals
Temwa Chawinga leveled the score in the 12th minute before Rose Kamzere netted the winner from a Chawinga assist, completing Malawi’s comeback after going behind.
Speaking after the match, Fazili thanked the players for their hard work and commitment but warned them against being overwhelmed by the historic achievement.
Fazili said the team must not be overwhelmed by the World Cup qualification but should shift focus now to the semi-final against Algeria.
Soccer analyst Edwin Mbewe echoed Fazili’s sentiments, saying the team’s goal should now be to reach the final.
He said the opponents have now realized that the Scorchers are no longer underdogs; hence, intensified preparation is essential in the fight for the championship.
Malawi made history with the victory, thrashing Ghana to book both a WAFCON semi-final berth and automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
A win against Algeria on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, will send the Scorchers to the final, where they will face either the hosts, Morocco, or Cameroon.
