Salima District promotes sports to identify young talent

By Fostina Mkandawire
Salima District has stepped up efforts to identify and nurture sporting talent among primary school learners through a series of inter-school competitions aimed at enhancing fitness, discipline, and teamwork.
The event, held at Kaphatenga Primary School, drew learners from various schools under the Kaphatenga Zone who competed in 100- and 200-metre races, football, and netball. The competitions are part of a broader district initiative to revive school sports and encourage holistic child development.
Salima District Sports Officer, Grace Thera Chirambo, said the activities are designed to help children channel their energy into positive engagements.
“By reviving these sporting events, we are offering learners a healthy platform to relieve stress and develop confidence,” Chirambo said.
Kaphatenga Primary School Head Teacher, Christopher Zamayere Jamu, who represented the Primary Education Advisor for the zone, said the competitions will help learners stay healthy and focused in their studies.
District Primary Schools Sports Coordinator, Joseph Kaunda, said the council is committed to promoting sports across all primary schools to ensure that talented learners are fully supported.
The event attracted strong participation from learners and teachers, signaling renewed interest in school-based sports within Salima District.
