Parliament has approved the 2026/27 National Budget, authorising K10.978 trillion for government expenditure after weeks of detailed scrutiny and deliberations.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday during the winding-up of the 2026/27 budget, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Joseph Mwanamveka, said the approved budget will support the implementation of government programmes aimed at promoting economic growth and improving service delivery.
The Minister highlighted key sectors set to benefit from the budget, including agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and governance.
“Major allocations include K971.3 billion to the Ministry of Agriculture, K558.07 billion to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, K316.6 billion to the Ministry of Education, and K447.1 billion to the Roads Fund Administration,” he said.Mwanamveka added that security institutions have also been allocated significant resources, including the Malawi Defence Force and the Malawi Police Service, while oversight bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the National Assembly have also received increased funding.
“We are confident that this budget will address pressing issues such as energy, education, and healthcare,” he said.
The approval follows the examination and adoption of expenditure estimates for various ministries, departments, and agencies, with all 59 votes passed. Implementation is now set to commence.
