Neno District Council warns companies against irresponsible mining

By Alinafe Kamphika
Director of Planning and Development for Neno District Council, Charles Lomoni, has warned two mining companies, ZX Mining Limited and Nyika Resources Limited against neglecting their social and environmental responsibilities as they implement projects in the district.
The caution was made during a District Environment Sub-Committee (DESC) meeting held at Beyond Our Hearts offices in Neno, where the two firms presented their plans for mining activities.
ZX Mining Limited plans to carry out alluvial gold mining activities along the Lisungwi River while Nyika Resources Limited plans to conduct niobium, gold and zircon mineral exploration activities in the area of Traditional Authority Dambe.
Lomoni emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to proper procedures in mining operations.
“The problem arises when companies come saying they only want to do exploration, but later start full mining operations without proper engagement. We expect all relevant stakeholders to be involved at every stage,” said Lomoni.
Consultant for ZX Mining Limited, Dhiliwayo Jere, said gold is a valuable resource with multiple uses in sectors such as medicine, electronics and finance.
“This project will create income-generating opportunities and contribute to national revenue. We are committed to responsible mining that minimizes environmental damage,” Jere said.
He added that the company will use water sprays to control dust, work closely with the Water Department on issues concerning water bodies and rehabilitate sites after mining.
“Where pits are left behind, we will backfill or convert them into safe water reservoirs and we will also replant trees in areas affected by our operations,” he said.
ZX Mining Limited is planning an estimated US$800,000 gold mining project along the Lisungwi River, covering 12.76 square kilometres and anticipated to generate revenue for the Malawi Government through gold sales.
Consultant for Nyika Resources Limited, Joyce Magalasi said Nyika Resources Limited plans to conduct exploration activities in Dambe area, covering villages such as Nseula, Matandani, and Kaliole and the exploration would focus on Niobium, Gold, and Zircon, minerals with significant industrial applications.
“Exploration enhances geological knowledge and transfers skills to local communities. Niobium is used in high-strength steel production, while Zircon is essential in ceramics and aerospace industries,” she said.
The DESC meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to review and discuss the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for both projects.
