Mwanza District Council briefs councilors on their roles

By Brian Wasili
Mwanza District Council over the weekend organised a one-day orientation session for ward councilors to enable them to get adequate knowledge on their roles and responsibilities before starting their official duties.
Mwanza District Commissioner, January Watchman Mvula, urged the councilors to uphold principles of accountability, transparency and teamwork when executing their duties.
“Councilors are key actors in local governance; they represent community interests and provide oversight role to council programmes. They are also key in decision-making through various service committees,” Mvula said.
He encouraged the councilors to work closely with the council secretariat, Members of Parliament, traditional authorities and development partners to ensure coordinated and effective service delivery to people in the district.
The briefing was attended by the council’s four ward councillors: Kayisi Chimbalanga (Mpandadzi), Frazer Bandiele (Thambani), Magret Sundu (Khudze), and Isaiah Francis (Mitseche).
Mwanza District Council Chairperson, Kayisi Chimbalanga, hailed the council for organising the session, saying it has provided them with relevant knowledge regarding their duty.
Also in attendance were Senior Chiefs Nthache, Kanduku and Govati, signifying the importance of close collaboration between elected leaders and traditional leaders in the implementation of development initiatives in the district.
The councilors were briefed on structure and functions of the council, legal and policy framework guiding local authorities, as well as the specific roles of councilors within council service committees.
