The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) will on 29–30 August host an Arts, Innovation and Culture Festival under the theme; Celebrating the Warm Heart of Africa.
One of the organisers, Frazer Don Phiri, told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the theme was chosen because Malawi is well known for its warmth, kindness, and rich culture.
“The theme shows pride in who we are. Students need to celebrate their culture, showcase their talents, and foster innovation while bringing together the MUBAS community,” said Phiri, adding that the event, which will be led entirely by students, will blend tradition with modern creativity.
“The bonfire initiation and cultural exhibition make this festival special. It is one of its kind as far as MUBAS is concerned,” he explained.
The organiser added that more details of notable performers will be announced once they confirm their participation.
A representative of Lhomwe tribe, John Matipwili, said his group plans to perform traditional dances and open a stall showcasing Lhomwe herbs and cultural items such as beads and sweet beer.
“Our aim is to promote unity as Lhomwe students come together to celebrate our traditions. We also want to show that university students have a role to play in preserving culture,” added Matipwili.
He said the festival will remind students that, despite being in university, they still belong to specific cultures that need to be preserved.
The two-day event will feature traditional dances, live music, poetry, drama, fashion shows, art exhibitions, food displays, and other student showcases.
MUBAS last held a cultural event four years ago, making this year’s festival a revival of cultural celebrations on campus after a long break.
