By Wendy Mkandawire

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC), has announced that this year’s national surgical campaign will run from July 20 to July 31, 2026.

According to a statement signed by Principal Secretary Bestone Chisamile, the campaign aims to provide timely surgical care to patients and help reduce the backlog of cases that have been waiting for treatment.

The campaign will be conducted at the country’s three major referral hospitals: Kamuzu Central Hospital, Mzuzu Central Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. A total of 300 patients are expected to benefit.

At Kamuzu Central Hospital, 80 surgeries will be performed for women with reproductive health conditions.
At Mzuzu Central Hospital, 60 general surgeries will be carried out, alongside 30 pediatric surgeries and 30 orthopedic surgeries.

Medical specialists will also be available to examine and treat patients with various ailments.
At Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital,
a range of surgical procedures will be conducted.

The Ministry of Health has urged all eligible patients who have been scheduled by participating hospitals to attend their appointments as communicated by their respective facilities.

The partnership with ECSA-HC is part of ongoing efforts to improve access to specialized health services and clear surgical backlogs across the ECSA region.
