Ministry Commits K3 Billion to Local Cancer Treatment

By Wendy Mkandawire

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation says it has committed K3 billion to ensure that cancer patients who were compelled to seek treatment in India can now access comprehensive cancer care within Malawi.

According to the Ministry, the strategic investment will preserve critical foreign exchange and alleviate the financial burden on vulnerable families.

Secretary for Health and Sanitation, Dr. Dan Namarika, has signed a landmark agreement between the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and the International Blantyre Cancer Centre (IBCC).

He said the partnership establishes a clear referral pathway for patients from public hospitals that lack specialized oncology infrastructure to a facility equipped with world-class, state-of-the-art technology.

In his remarks, founder of the International Blantyre Cancer Centre, Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, commended the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for its leadership and unwavering commitment to expanding access to quality cancer care.

He described the initiative as a national mission rooted in service and patriotism, saying the project seeks to end the era where Malawians are forced to drain their resources abroad for life-saving treatment.

“The facility will soon launch a specialized eye centre to deliver advanced ophthalmic services to Malawians,” he added.

Cancer remains one of the deadliest non-communicable diseases of our time. It claims an estimated 9 million lives globally each year, 700,000 lives across Africa and approximately 13,500 lives in Malawi.
