Minister of Mining Thoko Tembo has urged mining companies in Malawi to ensure that communities hosting mining operations directly benefit through tangible development projects.
Tembo told Parliament on Monday in response to a question from Mzimba North East parliamentarian Catherine Gotani Hara regarding the measures the government is taking to ensure locals benefit from the country’s mineral resources.
Tembo, in an interview, stated that the government is encouraging mining companies to go beyond mineral extraction by implementing community development programs that improve the livelihoods of local people.
He said that such initiatives should be integrated into companies’ operations as part of responsible mining practices.
The minister stated that firms should invest in projects that address community needs, including the construction of roads, clean water systems, and other infrastructure to improve the quality of life.
He added that companies must work closely with local authorities, traditional leaders, and community members to identify priority projects so that the benefits from mining are shared fairly with those in affected areas.
Tembo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable mining, saying the Ministry will continue engaging investors to ensure mining contributes not only to national economic growth but also to the long-term development and well-being of host communities.
