Minister of State, Alfred Ruwan Gangata, has emphasised the need for all soccer-loving Malawians to rally behind Silver Strikers as they face Tanzania’s Yanga Africa in the CAF competition this weekend.
The message has come as Silver Strikers await to clash with Yanga Africa on Saturday, in a decisive fixture expected to attract thousands of supporters and promote national unity through football enthusiasm.
In a press statement issued Thursday, Gangata said the fixture is not only a football match but also a national platform to promote patriotism, unity, and Malawi’s sports tourism potential.
“I wish to call upon all soccer-loving Malawians to come out in large numbers this weekend and support our very own team ya mmudzi, Silver Strikers, as they face Yanga Africa,” he said.
According to Gangata, the match presents a great opportunity to showcase Malawi’s hospitality while boosting economic activities through sports tourism, which contributes significantly to the country’s social and economic growth.“This is more than just a football match, it is an opportunity to showcase the passion, unity, and hospitality of our great nation while promoting sports tourism that can stimulate our economy,” he said.
Gangata highlighted that Yanga Africa will travel with over eight buses of supporters, a clear sign of how football promotes interaction, regional friendship, and creates valuable business opportunities for Malawians.
“From hotels and restaurants to transport and local vendors, everyone stands to benefit from this event, showing that football remains one of the strongest economic stimulants in the region,” said the Minister.
He, therefore, urged Malawians to rally behind the Bankers, saying their success would be a national triumph that uplifts the spirit of local football and strengthens Malawi’s image in continental tournaments.
“Let us rally behind the Bankers as they carry the Malawi flag high. Their victory will not only be a triumph for Silver Strikers but a win for national pride,” said Gangata.
Meanwhile, one of the soccer fans, Rapheal Nyirenda, has commended Gangata for his patriotic message, saying it reflects visionary leadership and true sportsmanship that inspires confidence among fans and the sporting community.
“This is a commendable move from the Minister. His encouragement demonstrates commitment to uniting Malawians through football and promoting sports as a key pillar for national development,” said Nyirenda.
Silver Strikers FC secured a place in the next round of the CAF Champions League after a goalless draw against Elgeco Plus of Madagascar at Bingu National Stadium, advancing on away goal rule following a 1-1 first-leg draw in Mauritius.
