Minister Mhango urges stricter road safety enforcement and tighter licensing

By Watipa Nyalugwe
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, has called for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, tighter driver licensing, and decisive action against corruption in the transport sector.
Speaking during his official visit to the Department of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) and the Roads Authority, Mhango said the rising number of motorcycle-related accidents requires urgent intervention.
“We must curb reckless motorcycle operations and ensure drivers are well-trained to safeguard lives,” he said.
The Minister also urged officials to uphold integrity in their duties.
“Corruption undermines road safety and public confidence. Officers should enforce the law without fear or favour,” he added.
DRTSS Director Christopher Madalitso Kuyere welcomed Mhango’s visit, noting it highlights government commitment to road safety. He said the department is addressing challenges such as limited resources and staff.
“Opening regional offices in Ngabu, Mangochi and Karonga has helped bring services closer to the people and reduce congestion at main centres,” he said.
Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer, Ammiel Champiti, said underfunding remains a challenge due to irregular fuel levy inflows, but the Authority has completed procurement for about 70 road maintenance contracts nationwide, covering emergency, periodic, and routine works to prevent further deterioration.
