Minister Advises Youth CDF has Job Creation Opportunities

By Wendy Mkandawire
Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri has asked the youth in the country to utilize the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocated to all constituencies, saying job creation opportunities exist within the fund.
Speaking after the official opening of the 2026 National Youth Summit at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), Phiri said that the CDF is not only for infrastructure development and that young people should search for opportunities where CDF resources will be circulating
Phiri said it is high time for the youth to change their mindset and think deeply when coming up with sustainable ideas.
He stated that the government has effectively empowered the youth and included them in decision-making.
He added that 30% of government contracts will also involve the youth, giving them a chance to bid and be accommodated if procedures are followed.
The Minister further urged the youth to be more innovative, skilful, and deep thinkers, instead of relying only on government employment.
The 2026 National Youth Summit brought together youth from different districts across the country, members of parliament, delegates from outside the country, and several ministers, including the Minister of Local Government.
The Summit started on Tuesday, 18 August, and will end on Thursday, 20 August 2026. Youth are sharing business ideas and discussing health-related issues.
This year’s theme is “Accelerating Progress: Reflecting on Impact, Expanding Prospects for Youth Development in Malawi.”
