Mighty Wanderers extends unbeaten run with 3 – 0 win over Mighty Tigers

By Gift Wahuta

Mighty Wanderers on Wednesday strengthened their push for the TNM Super League title with a 3 – 0 victory over Mighty Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium, in Blantyre, a result that keeps their unbeaten record intact and opens a two-point lead at the top of the standings.

Second-half goals from Muhammad Sulumba, Blessings Mwalilino and Isaac Kaliati were enough to earn the Nomads all three points, taking their tally to 55 from 23 matches, while FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who sit second, have 53 points from the same number of games.

After the match, Wanderers Head coach, Bob Mpinganjira, said he was pleased with the win but the Head Coach refused to be drawn into a further talk regarding championship, stressing that the team needs to remain focused.

“I am happy we won the match and reclaimed top spot, but I will not talk about the championship at this stage, we still have seven games to play, and the focus is to take each game as it comes,” he said, adding that the match against Tigers was harder than the score line suggests.

“They came with a defensive approach, and it was difficult to break them. We made a tactical change by taking off Captain Felix Zulu for Rajab Nyirenda to increase our attacking pressure, and it worked. I’m happy with the overall performance,” he said.

Tigers coach, Trevor Kajawa, admitted the game was tougher, saying his side spent much of the match defending as they tried to contain Wanderers.

“We tried our best, but it didn’t work out. It just wasn’t our day,” he said.

In other fixtures played on Wednesday, Silver Strikers beat Moyale Barracks 3 – 0, while Karonga United defeated Goshen City Dedza Dynamos 3 – 1.
